CV Help & Tips to help you get that JOB!

Your resume is your foot in the door, the most important step in the recruitment process, often winning you the opportunity of an interview.

On the first page include basic information such as your name, address and contact details, education and qualifications.

The Basic Layout of a standard CV

Set your CV (resume) in reverse chronological order with your current or most recent position at the beginning of your resume. Always include the month and year of all work history and education, and include a company description for each place you've worked.

The Format of your CV should be similar to this.

Keep it clear, leave lots of white space and only use 2 fonts max. Use bullet points rather than lengthy paragraphs for easy reading. A distraction to the contact of your resume is graphics or flowery fonts so try to avoid these. Use Microsoft Word as it's more widely accepted.

Content

Keep it concise and to the point , a resume should be no longer than 4 or 5 pages, depending on the length of your career. If your resume is too long the reader may not read your entire resume, in fact they may not read it at all!. so dont waffle on keep to the point

A brief but accurate appraisal of your Work History

For each role list your responsibilities, but most importantly, your achievements. Clearly outline to the reader how you can add value to their business. For positions that are not related to your current job search, responsibilities need not be outlined in detail. Also list the reason for leaving each role, don't give the reader the impression you've got something to hide.

Try and pay particular attention to detail!

Check for any spelling, layout or typing errors and get someone to proof read.  Remember your presentation of your resume is an indication of how you work, spelling mistakes and typing errors are not the impression you want to give.

Always try and provide any certificates or references you may have.

Along with your resume should be copies of certificates relating to professional and or educational qualifications as well as any references from previous employers.  Only include a few and only those relevant to the role you're applying for. It does'nt look good if your interviewer finds discrepancies in your CV.

Always supply a covering letter

Always include a cover letter when sending your CV/resume. This is your first introduction to any prospective employer. Use it to outline your individual skills and abilities and match them to the job requirements.

Once complete why not upload your CV to the CV Library, not only will this allow employers to also see your CV, but give you access to thousands of fresh jobs daily.

Jobcentre plus Advisor Job Interview Tips

Research your prospective Employer

Good research is the key to a good interview. You can do this in many ways, such as on the internet or through newpapers and journals, at the library or through your recruitment consultant. You'll be surprised of some the things you may find out about any future employer.

Also be prepared to come back with some responses to possible questions that you may be asked and try to think of a few questions you would like to ask the interviewer about the company and or the position. Try to be a knowledgeable about the company

Present Yourself:

Your first impressions are also very important. You most certainly won't get a second chance at making a first impression. So you will need to look, act and dress professionally. A dark suit and tie or skirt and jacket are professional.

Your Interview:

  1. Take a spare copy of your resume to the interview along with copies of your certificates and references.
  2. Arrive at least ten minutes early as interviewers are unimpressed by lateness.
  3. The interview is a two way discussion so answer questions directly, honestly and keep it to the point.
  4. Never interrupt, always listen and answer only what is asked. If you want the question repeated don't be afraid to ask.
  5. At the end of your interview, smile and thank the people involved for their time.

Be Confident and don't be afraid to sell yourself.

Good Luck !
